YouTube’s reportedly planning a subscription service for on-demand video
The subscription-based VOD service is reported to be modeled on YouTube Music Key, which brings unlimited, ad-free access to music videos and about 30 million tracks on Google Play Music for $7.99 per month.
An executive at a YouTube content creation partner said that it was approached by the video site late last year about getting on board an SVOD licensing deal.
Competitors like Vimeo, Vessel and Hulu are upping their game against the Google-owned video giant with exclusive content and paid ad-free viewing options. YouTube is fighting back with continued invest in marketing its talent, and by providing more tools for creators, like its Content ID copyright system — but content studios feel that the platform doesn’t yet help them make money very easily.
We’ve contacted YouTube to find out more and will update this post when we hear back.
