The most anticipated games of 2016
Now that 2015 is over, it’s time to look forward to what the world of games has for 2016. This upcoming year promises to be one where the current generation of consoles truly stands out and produces the types of quality games we’ve been waiting for.
For fun, the “Geek” asked people on Twitter what games they were most anticipating next year. The games listed here are the ones which got mentioned the most. This list is in no particular order.
The Last Guardian
This title has been anticipated since it was announced way back during E3 2009. Sony showed it again during this year’s E3, with a release date of 2016. The follow up to critically acclaimed gems, Icoand Shadow of the Colossus, has a lot to live up to so here’s hoping it meets those lofty expectations if it does indeed come out next year as promised.
Horizon: Zero Dawn
If robots are cool and dinosaurs are awesome, then robot dinosaurs must be the greatest thing out there. That’s basically what Horizon: Zero Dawn is promising and that’s enough for a lot of people. This prehistoric future where you play as a barbarian who must survive in a harsh, robot-filled world captured everyone’s imagination during E3 and will join a number of other similar titles in 2016 (Far Cry: Primaland WiLD). However, this is the only one with robot dinosaurs so it has a distinct advantage over those two.
Mass Effect: Andromeda
Though we know very little about the fourth installment in the Mass Effect series, just knowing it is in development is enough to get us excited. The game will take place in an entirely different galaxy and will star an all-new protagonist and supporting cast. If this game continues to tell the types of stories seen in previous games, coupled with the strong characterization that is also a series staple, then there’s no doubt this will be another winner from BioWare.
No Man’s Sky
Another space game folks are looking forward to is No Man’s Sky. This independent title promises a large-scale explorable dynamic universe filled with surprises unique to each player. It’s still a mystery as to what players will be doing in the game other than finding new worlds, but that idea alone is enough to warrant excitement.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
The Uncharted franchise has been Sony’s flagship series since the last generation, so it’s no surprise that the fourth installment on the PlayStation 4 is hotly anticipated. To be fair, this is probably going to be more of the same, but that’s fine since that’s exactly what people want. A fun story with witty characters, over the top set pieces, and an addictive multiplayer is what this game will offer and folks will get just that. Let’s just hope Sony doesn’t delay it again.
The first big exclusive for the Xbox One in 2016 is a spiritual successor of sorts to the much beloved Alan Wake. This game, which is also tied into a TV series, will have time manipulation mechanics mixed in with traditional cover based shooting. Little is known about this game, but its slick graphics and promising gameplay make it a game to keep on your radar.
Street Fighter V
Capcom is bringing back the game that put the fighting genre on the map with Street Fighter V. The game promises the same fierce and intense gameplay that the series in known for but with modern touches to keep things fresh. This is also a game that is sure to be popular within the professional fighting game tournament scene in 2016. Street Fighter V will be a big hit for sure.
The Legend of Zelda
This is another series that fans only need to hear the name of to lose their minds. Truth be told, next to nothing is known about the game, but that doesn’t seem to matter. It’s Zelda and that’s all fans want. This title has been delayed several times and with the Nintendo NX looming, it’s possible this title may see a simultaneous release on both the new console and the Wii U.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Deus Ex: Human Revolution brought this franchise back into prominence and people have anticipated its follow up. The game will have new cyber-tastic abilities for players to try out, as well as a deeper conspiracy to uncover. This title is shaping up to be even bigger than its predecessor. With a late summer release date, it will also be like a cool drink of water for those suffering from the annual summer gaming drought.
Besides Final Fantasy XV, no Japanese RPG is more desired than Persona 5. Whereas FFXV is trying to cater to Western audiences with its highly detailed graphics and real-time action, Persona 5 keeps things decidedly Japanese with anime-style graphics and turn-based combat. This is exactly what fans of the series want so this isn’t a detriment to the game.
Dark Souls III
Fans of the Souls series have been spoiled lately. Not only did they get both Bloodborne and the remastered version of Dark Souls II this year, but now they’re going to be getting Dark Souls III. This (supposed) final entry in the core Souls series promises to bring back all of the punishing brutality that the series is known for. Since it is the follow up (release wise) to Bloodborne, expect some of that game’s mechanics to make it over to this one. This will no doubt be the most difficult AAA release of 2016 without question.
I don’t know about you guys, but any game that deliberately tries to emulate the look and feel of cartoons from the 1930s instantly gets my money. This side-scrolling run and gun game will have players taking on continuous boss battles in order to repay a debt to the devil. If the game ends up being half as fun as its animated style looks, then this will be one of the gems of the year.
Mighty No. 9
It’s been a long road for this Kickstarted game, but Mighty No. 9 is finally coming out this year. This game is, for all intents and purposes, a spiritual successor to Mega Man. Since Capcom isn’t releasing anyMega Man games any time soon, this is the best that we’re going to get. Considering that it’s a game by Keiji Inafune, the creator of Mega Man, we can expect Mighty No. 9 to be every bit as good (and challenging) as that classic franchise.
Gears of War 4
After Halo, Gears of War is the biggest thing on Xbox so it’s expected that the fourth installment in the main series is one fans have been clamoring for. At this point in time, next to nothing is known about the game. That’s fine however, as we can no doubt expect this title to be filled with all of the over the top machismo that the franchise is famous for.
Don’t forget, the above games are only the ones we know about and are looking forward to. Who knows what surprises will come at us over the course of year, but all we know is we can’t wait.
