IFTTT says goodbye to recipes, hello to Applets

IFTTT has announced that it is doing away with Recipes, and replacing them with something called Applets. These, its says, will offer greater functionality and complexity.

According to the company, Applets will allow developers to integrate IFTTTfunctionality into their products. This, in theory, should make it easier for developers to connect their apps, websites, and Internet of Things (IoT) products to a broad collection of services.

According to Linden Tibbets, IFTTT co-founder and CEO, “IFTTT Applets enable a future where all of our services work together. Every business is a technology company, and every tech company is rapidly becoming a service. Applets help those services integrate quickly and easily, in a way that we can all trust.”

To coincide with the launch of Applets, IFTTT has also redesigned its website and mobile app, in order to put this feature front-and-center.

As an enthusiast for smart home technology, I’ve long been a fan of IFTTT. In the absence of any kind of standardization, it’s made it possible for devices from disparate manufacturers to work together. It’s the string and duct tape that holds the Internet of Things together.

So, how do I feel about Applets? In short: Really, really excited. IFTTT is going to do for app developers and website developers what it did for IoT.

The launch of Applets comes just one day after Microsoft launched Flow – its IFTTT alternative. Just one day on, it’s clear that Redmond has a lot of catching up to do.
